AIDS --- the most despised and feared sexually transmitted disease stalking mankind. Two decades since its detection, the scourge is yet to be exorcised. Spreading at a terrifying pace, it has left no part of the world untouched. So far, AIDS has resulted in the death of approximately 11.7 million people worldwide.

According to UNAIDS/WHO
estimates, there are 5-7 million HIV positive people in India. This makes it
the single largest body of people with the virus in South-East Asia. Of this, nearly 40-50% are women. Caught in the vicious cycle are children, born HIV positive, punished for no fault of theirs.

The first HIV case was isolated in 1986 in Tamil Nadu, and since then sero-positivity rate has only multiplied --- with a vengeance. It increased from 2.5 per 1000 people to 11.2/1000 in 1992, to 16.3/1000 in 1996 to 22.73/1000 in March 1998. By July 1998, 78,904 HIV infections and 6,386 AIDS cases were reported across the country. The actual figures could be much more, given the limited detection infrastructure in the country.
Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu with better detection infrastructure show higher incidence of HIV infections. According to World Bank estimates though, the highest number of reported cases have been from Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
