The medical facilities provided by the Centre are primarily quasi-medical, in keeping with the main focus of providing care and support to the people living with HIV/AIDS.
For the short stay clients there is a treatment package of 7 days, which includes conducting spot tests for detecting HIV positivity, tests to check CD-4 count, VDRL and HbsAg treatment and pre-test, as well as post-test, counselling. The Centre is equipped with all the basic medical equipment to provide the necessary attention and care that patients might need. These include drip stands, oxygen cylinders, suction Apparatus, nebulizers, all sterilizing and dressing equipments etc. At FF's HIV/AIDS Centre a mini-laboratory have been set up with a Lab Technician, where all basic medical investigations are carried out.
Nature Of Illnesses Encountered:
FF is geared primarily towards treatment and control of opportunistic infections. Some of the common ailments encountered are Tuberculosis (pulmonary, extra-pulmonary, of the lymph nodes, spinal cord etc), Pneumonia, Pneucystic Carnii, Toxoplasmosis, recurrent Diarrhea, Urinary tract infections, Fungal diseases and in women, pelvic inflammatory diseases.
Nearly 9 out of every 35 patients are also affected by AIDS dementia. At a later stage when the body's immune system completely breaks down, a high prevalence of complicated neurological infections are found. This is in addition to other multiple infections which ultimately claims the life of the patient.
Freedom Foundation also has a 13-member medical advisory board to formulate medical strategies. It has also networked with National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), St. Martha's Hospital and the Government T.B. Hospital to deal with complications arising from the disease.
